A closer look: The Lion’s Turn
In The Lion’s Turn, the subject’s power does not depend on movement. The lion turns its head, holding the viewer’s attention through expression and the direction of its gaze.
Look at the eye first.
Try looking at the painting for a few seconds without inspecting the details. Where does your attention settle? Then look again more slowly. The face becomes a way into the surrounding mane, the shape of the body and the darker spaces around it.
